Pyotr Vasilievich Basin

(Russian , b. 1793 - 1877 )

Upon graduating from the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Basin received a ten year grant to study classical painting and Old Masters works in Europe. His main artistic achievements were the large-scale paintings of religious scenes above the altar of S. Ekaterina church at the Academy, considered to be the greatest of the period. From 1837 to 1839, Basin painted over forty mythological and allegorical figures for the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. He received decorations from St. Vladimir and a commemorative gold medal for his achievements in restoring the Palace after the fire of 1837. He also created similar masterworks at Kazan Cathedral, Isaakiev Cathedral and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. An Important preliminary study possibly used to decorate Michael Palace in St. Petersburg. The artist's works are in permanent collections of St. Petersburg's Academy of Arts, State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and State Tretiyakovskaya Gallery.
